The University Teachers Association of Ghana held a press conference on July 28, 2021 demanding for a restore of the initial 2012 salary for its members.
The Association in the press conference indicated that there has been a reduction in the salary of UTAG members to more less than half of their initial salary.
According to UTAG, the press conference was very necessary because the government has been giving a deaf ear to their complaints over some time now. Moreover, they made it clear in their statement that although meetings are been held between UTAG and the government, all that is negotiated there are not implemented because those who sit in the meeting for the government are not people with the authority to amend their level of salary to take.
The Association therefore went on to make matters clear that if the government do not make amends as soon as Monday August 2, 2021, UTAG will have no option than to withdraw lecturers from teaching and that will include conduct of examinations, marketing of examination scripts and other vital role they play in the country's course for national growth.
Before making the above statement, UTAG urged the government to make an effort to reduce the gap between the highest and the lowest paid public servants in the country and then suggested a way to curb that situation. Their goal for saying this was to tell the government that public servant should be well paid to live in dignity.
