In a press release dated 16th October 2020, the Police Department has decided to deploy 200 armed police officers to provide bodyguard protection to serving members of Parliament.
According to the press release signed by the Director of Public Affairs of the Police Headquarters in Accra, Mrs. Sheilla Kessie Abayie-Buckman, the provision of bodyguard protection to the Members of Parliament is for the duration of their occupancy, and the 200 deployed police officers will be in addition to the seventy-five Police bodyguards already provided to the leadership and Members who double as Ministers and Deputy Ministers.
It was again stated that the officers would be deployed as part of the existing Police Parliamentary Protection Unit after certain operational conditions arranged between the Ministry for the Interior and the Parliamentary Service have been satisfied. Meanwhile, arrangements have been made for all levels of the Police Command to cooperate with respective Members of Parliament to provide security.
The Police Service further assured Ghanaians that they are ready to live up to their constitutional mandate and are working in concert with other security agencies especially during this election period and beyond.
This directive comes after a member of parliament of Mfantseman Constituency was shot dead by armed men on his way home after campaigning.
