In a letter to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ghana Grid Company, Limited (GRIDCo) dated 13th November 2020, the Chamber Of Independent Power Producers, Distributors, and Bulk Consumers have decided to withdraw their services in the coming days over the inability of Government to settle the debt owed.
This decision is in accordance with their demand on the Electricity Company of Ghana (E.C.G) and Government of Ghana (G.o.G) to settle at least 80% of the overdue receivables, which is worth about USD$1Billion, in order to put them in a position where they can continue their operations.
The IPPs have made a lot of petitions to the Government including their Petition for help dated August 3rd, 2020 and addressed to the President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo, their letter to the Honorable Senior Minister dated 21st July 2020 and their recent letter dated 4th November 2020 and addressed to the Minister of Finance, Honorable Ken Ofori Atta, appealing to them to settle a substantial part of their overdue as a matter of extreme urgency so as to enable them to discharge pressing long-overdue obligations to their lenders, suppliers, and other stakeholders. Seeing no effect in their appeals, the IPPs have finally decided to withdraw their services, which may lead to a lack of power supply in the country.
The IPPs further stated that their Central Control Rooms(CCRs) are expected to communicate with the GRIDCO’s Systems Control Center.
