MRS. REBECCA AKUFFO-ADDO; FIRST LADY OF GHANA REJECTS GH899,097.84 PAID ALLOWANCES

Statement from the office of the First Lady of the Republic of Ghana; Mrs. Rebecca Akuffo-Addo on July 12, 2021 indicates that, her attention has been drawn to the recommendations of the Committee established in accordance with Article 71 of the constitution which seek to make regular the payment of allowances to spouses of the current Presidents and the Vice Presidents, former Presidents and Vice Presidents, as part of privileges due them under the Article 71 of the 1992 constitution.
Her Excellency goes on the say that, she has taken note of the ongoing conversation in the nation pertaining to the bipartisan approval made by parliament as mandated by the constitution as a body which approves the emoluments of the executive.
Again, she added that the payment of allowances to First Lady of the country has been in existence which the past First Ladies for this 4th Republic have all been beneficiaries prior to her.
In conclusion, the First lady, in consultation with His Excellency of the Republic, has decided to refund all monies paid to her as allowances from the date of the President's assumption to office (January 2017 to date) amounting to Ghc899,097.84.
